Fede Álvarez on Alien: Romulus sequel and THAT ending

August 22, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Alien: Romulus might be a film in which most of the characters fail to heed the multiple warnings placed in front of them, but please don’t fall into that same trap because this story contains spoilers for Fede Álvarez’s horror-hit.

With $120 million banked since its release, and largely favourable reviews (read our take here), talk is already starting to emerge about which part of the universe the nine-film franchise could be headed next, with director Fede Álvarez hinting in a recent deep-dive with The Hollywood Reporter that conversations have already taken place regarding the further adventures of Cailee Spaeny’s Rain.

On whether Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues had any thoughts on a sequel, he said “For me, it’s always been about story. So, once we finished, we started thinking, “What do you think happens when or if they get to Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?” We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, “Oh, that sounds like a sequel.”

Don’t expect to return to space too soon though, with Alvarez keen not to rush into a follow-up, saying “We’ll wait to see what people think and if people ask for it. My philosophy is that you should never make [a sequel] in two years. You’ve got to get away. You’ve got to get the audience to really want it. If you think about Alien and Aliens, there’s seven years between them. But we definitely have ideas about where it should go.”

As well as discussing the CGI resurrection of an iconic legacy actor, and the divisive reaction to a certain line, the Don’t Breathe director also addressed the film’s ending, which features a human-alien hybrid referred to as ‘The Offspring’, that battles our survivors in-place of the iconic xenomorph, and was originally a bone of contention at Disney.

“They did [push back] at the beginning [with regard to the Offspring], but not because they didn’t like it. They just thought, ‘Is it too much? Do we really have to go there?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, now that you said that we shouldn’t, I know that I will. If you’re given an Alien movie by a corporation that is owned by Disney and they immediately say, ‘Yeah, let’s make it,’ then you are failing somehow. So we really pushed it to the limit, and I’m glad we did.”

“While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonisers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Alien: Romulus is directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) and stars The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and newcomer Aileen Wu.
