Magic: The Gathering animated series in development from Star Trek: Picard’s Terry Matalas

September 23, 2024 by Ricky Church

Netflix is once again developing an animated series based upon Magic: The Gathering, the popular table top card game, and has chosen its new showrunner.

Announced during the streamer’s Geeked Week, Netflix revealed plans to develop the series after previous attempt have failed in the last few years. Terry Matalas, who served as showrunner for the second and third seasons of Star Trek: Picard, will serve as its showrunner.

Magic: The Gathering is a fantasy game where players collect powerful magical figures such as wizards and elves among other fantastic warriors, beasts and creatures. Magic was created in 1993 and has remained a popular game, expanding from cards to online gaming with several million players. In the past Netflix has attempted to make an animated series with Avengers directors Anthony and Joe Russo on board until they were followed by Jeff Kline. Both previous iterations they worked on were scrapped.

In addition to showrunning Star Trek: Picard and Magic: The Gathering, he has also been named showrunner for Marvel’s Vision series on Disney+, which recently cast Picard‘s Todd Stashwick alongside the returning Paul Bettany.
