25 years after starring in the crime comedy Blue Streak, Deadline reports that Martin Lawrence is set to return for Blue Streak 2 which is now in development.
Blue Streak featured Lawrence as Miles Logan, a professional jewel thief who is betrayed by one of his crew and hides a rare diamond in a building under construction before getting captured by police. Upon getting out of jail and on his way to recover the diamond, Miles discovers the constructed building is a new police station. He is forced to create an identity as a police officer to sneak inside the station and ends up being partnered with a real cop, played by Luke Wilson, making his job to recover the diamond even tougher.
Blue Streak is one of Lawrence’s most successful films in his career. The timing of this comes off his reprisal as Detective Marcus Burnett in the Bad Boys franchise alongside Will Smith, which just released its latest installment Bad Boys: Ride or Die this summer to a highly successful box office run off its $100 million budget.
Blue Streak 2 will be written by Cole Maliska (Chicago P.D.) with Lawrence set to produce through his company Run Tel Dat. Sony Pictures will oversee the sequel just as they did on the original, but no director has been chosen yet.
