Dark Phoenix’s Simon Kinberg tapped for Star Wars Trilogy

November 7, 2024 by EJ Moreno

After being one of the most prominent names behind the 20th Century Fox/Marvel era, Simon Kinberg has found his next blockbuster: Star Wars!

Per Deadline, “Lucasfilm has closed a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop a trilogy of Star Wars films.” While he won’t direct the projects, Kinberg will write them and produce them with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

Eagle-eyed fans of the galaxy far, far away may know Kinberg has a history with the franchise. Kinberg previously worked in co-creating the Emmy-nominated animated series Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, which ran for four seasons. He was also tapped as a consultant on the 2015 JJ Abrams-directed Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Outside Star Wars, Kinberg spent a decade with the X-Men franchise, beginning as a writer on 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and eventually directing 2019’s Dark Phoenix, one of the final 20th-century X-Men movies. He was also a producer of the first two Deadpool films and an exec producer on Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for what Kinberg will do within this franchise, Deadline notes his work will be “episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga.” As he looks to continue that original story, this could  “instead begin a new saga.” It was also noted that Star Wars projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover are still in the works.

Stay tuned for more news on Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars.
