Disney appear to be riding the crest of a wave when it comes to their box-office receipts, because following Inside Out 2‘s record breaking performance earlier this year, Moana 2 is set to follow suit when it sails into cinemas later this month.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Walt Disney Animation’s sequel to 2016’s $687 million grossing original is looking at a North-American Thanksgiving opening weekend of between $125-$135 million.
The record for the lucrative 5-day holiday period is currently held by another Disney title in 2013’s Frozen ($93.6 million), while the first film debuted to $82.1 million over the same holiday period.
Moana 2‘s prospects are also expected to be buoyed by Paramount blockbuster Gladiator II and the first part of Universal’s adaptation of the smash-hit musical Wicked, which open just before the Disney film blows into cinemas.
Reuniting Auli’i Cravalho as the voice of Moana, with Dwayne Johnson as singing Demi-God Maui, Moana 2 finds our seafaring hero setting out on a journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
