With Denzel Washington laying out his next few years of filmmaking, eventually leading a well-earned retirement from the acting craft, we’ve also learned a wonderful new surprise.
Washington, the legendary actor behind many of our favorite film moments is currently promoting his latest role in Gladiator II from Ridley Scott. The Shakespearean-trained actor can act the best in smaller productions, but fans know the power he brings to a blockbuster like this long-awaited sequel. In a recent interview with Today Show Australia, we got news of Washington in an upcoming blockbuster: Black Panther 3!
During the chat, he lays out his film slate. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. It’s probably not that many. I played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello at 70. After that, I am playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking to Steve McQueen about a film,” he reveals.
That’s when the bombshell drops, “After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do the film Othello; after that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
Black Panther fans know how important Denzel Washington’s presence has been to this franchise. Years ago, the late Chadwick Boseman sang the praises of Washington, recalling an acting school he took with Washington one summer: “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”
Marvel has not officially confirmed Ryan Coogler’s third Black Panther movie is in the works. Washington may have jumped the gun a bit with this news, but it would make sense for more adventures in Wakanda.
