Although they’re yet to head off into space for their long-planned NASA movie, director Doug Liman and his Edge of Tomorrow and American Made star Tom Cruise now look to be heading into the depths of the ocean with the filmmaker confirming that the duo are set to reunite on the supernatural thriller Deeper.
Liman revealed the news to Showbiz411 (via Dark Horizons) earlier this week, stating that the pair are looking to deliver a “scary movie” with the project, and that, “I have never done one, and neither has Tom Cruise.”
How could Liman forget Interview with the Vampire, and in its 30th anniversary month too…?
Deeper follows a disgraced astronaut who encounters sinister supernatural events as he ventures into a newly-discovered ocean trench in a submersible. It is based on a script from Max Landis (Chronicle) which has been circling Hollywood for almost a decade, with directors Kornel Mundruczo (White God) and Baltasar Kormakur (Everest) attached at various points and the latter setting Idris Elba to star before it was shelved back in 2019 following sexual misconduct allegations against Landis.
Tom Cruise is currently prepping his eighth outing as Ethan Hunt in May’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning as well as shooting the new film from Alejandro González Iñárritu. He’ll follow that up by reuniting with Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie on the WWII film Broadsword. Beyond that, he has several other potential projects in the works including a third Top Gun, a Days of Thunder sequel, and even the long-planned Edge of Tomorrow sequel with Liman.
