Paapa Essiedu eyed for Severus Snape in Harry Potter TV seriesTV reboot

December 5, 2024 by EJ Moreno

We know the Harry Potter television series is beginning its casting process, with Mark Strong or Mark Rylance reportedly eyed for the iconic role of Dumbledore. But the devious role of Snape has seemingly been filled.

Deadline reported I May Destroy You‘s Paapa Essiedu is in talks to play Severus Snape, who is expected to be the antagonist in the series. Alan Rickman made the role famous in the film franchise.

Francesca Gardiner writes and executive produces the Harry Potter series. Mark Mylod will serve as an executive producer and will helm multiple episodes.

An HBO spokesperson addressed the casting rumors: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

This casting choice doesn’t seem out of the range of possibilities, with the production reportedly “planning to have a diverse cast for the TV series.” If you recall, the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opened the door by casting Noma Dumezweni in the role of Hermione Granger.

Paapa Essiedu is an Emmy- and BAFTA-nominated actor who recently appeared in the National Theatre’s The Effect, written by Lucy Prebble and directed by Jamie Lloyd, which is transferring to The Shed in New York this year. Essiedu also starred opposite Saoirse Ronan in The Outrun.

Stay tuned for more casting news on the Harry Potter TV series.
