With this week’s surprise news that Chris Evans will make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday in an unspecified role, speculation has been running wild as to who he might be playing in the upcoming sequel and some fans wondering whether we might see him reclaiming the shield for a return as the costumed Captain America.
Well, laying to rest any worry for Sam Wilson fans, Deadline has subsequently confirmed that Anthony Mackie is also on the cast list to return for Doomsday, and that Sam will still be the MCU’s main Captain America as of the film (spoilers for the end of his fight with Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World, I guess).
Now, given we’re in the Multiverse Saga, Sam’s involvement doesn’t rule out an Evans return as a Captain America variant; he’s also fresh off returning to his Fantastic Four character as Jonny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Marvel could off course introduce him as a new character entirely, a la Robert Downey Jr. and Doctor Doom. Variants and alternate characters may be better suited to Avengers: Secret Wars however, so it’s also possible Evans’ involvement could be limited to little more than an Old Steve cameo.

So far, only Mackie, Evans and Downey are confirmed for the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, but expect plenty of announcements over the coming weeks as directors Anthony and Joe Russo continue to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest ahead of filming in the spring.
Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on May 1st 2026.
