After more than a year in development, Hulu is moving forward with its plans for a “new chapter” of Prison Break as the streamer has officially ordered a pilot for the new iteration from creator Elgin James (Mayans M.C., The Outlaws).
The news comes off the back of a streaming resurgence for the original starring Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller, which became the #1 most streamed series in the US back in August after making its return to Netflix for a limited run alongside its streaming home on Hulu. However, neither Purcell’s Lincoln Burrows or Miller’s Michael Scofield are expected to be involved with the upcoming pilot/potential series.
While specific details are being kept under wraps at present, James’ take is described as “its own thing set within the same universe.” Casting is yet to begin, although it’s thought that the writer and director is looking to bring on board talent he’s worked with on past projects.
Created by Paul Scheuring and premiering on Fox in 2005, Prison Break followed Purcell and Miller’s two brothers, with Miller’s Michael Scofield devising an elaborate plan to break Purcell’s Lincoln Burrows out of prison, where he’s on Death Row after being falsely convicted of the murder of the Vice President’s brother. It initially ran for four seasons and was followed by the 2009 TV movie Prison Break: The Final Break as well as a revived fifth season in 2017.
