Deadline is reporting that James Mangold (The Wolverine) has joined Disney’s long-gestating Captain Nemo, an origin story based upon Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Mangold replaces David Fincher, who was originally attached prior to directing Gone Girl.
Mangold, who is busy prepping Wolverine 3 with Hugh Jackman, is not the only director circling the same material, as Bryan Singer is set to follow up X-Men: Apocalypse with his own 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie for 20th Century Fox.
Captain Nemo is currently being written by Sebastian Gutierrez (The Eye), while Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) is among the previous writers who have provided drafts of the script.
