George Miller has spent the years after his 2015 action hit Mad Max: Fury Road teasing more forays into the apocalyptic world of the franchise, with his most recent film being the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Now he has again teased going back to the wastelands with a completed script for a new Mad Max.
Miller has often spoken about his desire to direct another adventure featuring Max Rockatansky, which he has called Mad Max: The Wasteland. In an interview with Vulture, Miller revealed he has a script written for the next Mad Max, but it might not be the next film he will shoot as he has several other ideas battling against each other.
“We’ve got another script,” Miller told the outlet, “But having been doing this long enough where I’m habituated to storytelling, I find myself with way too many stories — not only in my head, but in the form of screenplays or at least very detailed notes that are within reach of screenplays. I’m a professional daydreamer, really. This was seen as my big deficit as a kid: ‘George would do better at school if he didn’t daydream so much’ was on my report card.”
“So, there’s lots of stories,” Miller continued. “Indeed, one of them is a Mad Max. It is not something I would do next, because there are two things I’m keen to do next. But if, for whatever reason, the planets align, you can never tell. Too often, you’re lining up to do a movie and then something happens. Some things fall into place and some don’t, so all I can say is we’ll see.”
One reason that may impact Miller’s decision to make Mad Max: The Wasteland his next project is because of Furiosa‘s lackluster box office earnings. Despite high scores on numerous critic reviews and audience ratings, the film only earned $173.8 million worldwide off a budget of $168 million, though it has managed to find success on streaming and home video. The film served as a prequel to Fury Road by following a young Furiosa played by Anya Taylor-Joy as she was taken from her home by Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus and eventually found her way in Immortan Joe’s army.
We’ll have to wait longer to see if Miller manages to get Mad Max: The Wasteland off the ground and his next project or if he will take a break from the apocalyptic desert for one of his other original ideas. What would you rather see first? Let us know on our social channels at @FlickeringMyth…
