Focus Features has revealed the title of the third and what looks to be final Downton Abbey film, signaling the end of the beloved franchise. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is set to be released in theatres on September 12th and you can get your first look at the poster here…
Downton Abbey premiered in 2010 and ran for six series before making it to the big screen in 2019 with Downton Abbey: The Movie. Coming off its acclaim from critics and fans, the film proved to be a huge hit by earning $194 million worldwide at the box office. A sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era, followed in 2022 and made $92 million, but was also greeted positively and was one of Dame Maggie Smith’s final roles before her passing in 2024. A New Era saw her fan-favourite character Violet Crawley, better known as the Dowager Countess, pass away in the film’s final minutes.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will reunite series stars Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Michelle Dockery, along with Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera and Douglas Reith.
Also appearing in the film will be Paul Giamatti as Harold Levinson, Cora’s brother, and A New Era‘s Dominic West as actor Guy Dexter. Newcomers include Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan. Directing is Simon Curtis from a screenplay written by creator Julian Fellowes.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will be released on September 12th.
