The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Straight Up Films has snapped up the big screen rights to the Square Enix video game franchise Thief and are partnering up with Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment and Prime Universe for a feature film adaptation.
The screenwriting team of Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (Misconduct, Not Safe For Work) will pen the script for the movie, which “will be set in the game’s dark fantasy world where a master thief tries to restore freedom, which has been denied by a magic-wielding tyrant.”
The stealth horror series launched in 1998 with Thief: The Dark Project and has been followed by four instalments, most recently in 2014.
