Sony were seemingly trying to play catch up with Marvel and Disney by creating their own wider universe for Spider-Man when they announced the release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4. The release of the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 seemed like the best place to start this, but one element may not be coming back for the fourth installment – the wall crawler himself Andrew Garfield.
In an interview with Yahoo!, Garfield gave a quick overview of his current contract status, “I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me.”
He also went on to say what we can expect from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as the first stepping stone of Sony’s Spidey universe, “I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.” He continues, “I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air – How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through. Now we could say, ‘who is this guy?’ How can we best serve Spider-Man?”
Should Andrew Garfield leave the series, who would you like to see next take on the role of Spider-Man?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release on April 18th 2014 in the UK and May 2nd 2014 in North America with a cast that also includes Emma Stone, Sally Field, Paul Giamatti, Chris Cooper, Felicity Jones, Colm Feore, B.J. Novak, Chris Zylka, Embeth Davidtz and Campbell Scott.
