Having departed Universal’s planned live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, it looks like Sofia Coppola has found her next project, with The Tracking Board reporting that the director is set to remake the 1971 drama The Beguiled.
Directed by Don Siegel from Thomas P. Cullian’s Southern Gothic novel and starring Clint Eastwood, The Beguiled is set during the Civil War and takes place in an all-female Confederate boarding school, which takes in an injured Union soldier to help him recover. As he cons his way into their hearts, tensions rise as the women vie for his attention.
The site reports that Nicole Kidman will play the Head Mistress Martha Farnsworth, with Kirsten Dunst set to appear as a teacher and Elle Fanning a student. It’s said that the producers are searching for “a Chris Pratt type” for the Clint Eastwood role.
Coppola’s last film was 2013’s The Bling Ring, while she also helmed last year’s Netflix holiday special A Very Murray Christmas.
