The Week in Star Wars is back! And we’ve got our first look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a few bits on Star Wars: Episode VIII and some more of that Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-Ray goodness…
Let’s kick this week off with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We suddenly got a trailer announcement on Wednesday with the news of the first full trailer coming the following day. Well, it landed and you can watch it here. The trailer was praised heavily online, but the Flickering Myth writing staff seemed to really love it! You can read their reaction to the movie here, and be sure to check out the FMTV Scooperhero News reaction and review here, and The Flickering Myth Podcast review here (or in the player below)…
…The first poster and official images for the standalone movie were released shortly thereafter, which you can check out here, while Lucasfilm also unveiled its Rogue One merchandise packaging and Marvel artist Phil Noto shared a rather nice fan poster that he put together. Meanwhile, be sure to check out Samuel Brace’s article ‘4 Reasons To Be Excited About Rogue One’, which you can read here…
…While Rogue One will act as a good palate cleanser as we wait for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, we can’t forget the movie is currently in production. And Kylo Ren himself Adam Driver has been very praising of his director while also talking about the movie. “I feel like there was so many moving pieces in the first one – just trying to solve it and set the vocabulary for what it was,” he says. There’s a lot of that anxiety is gone, because people have developed a language. I think it’s more of a testament to Rian Johnson coming into something very established and making it [his]. I can’t wait to get on set, just because he’s so unassuming and intelligent and approachable. The script they’ve come up with is really great…”
…Mark Hamill has also been teasing fans, saying he will be revealing Star Wars: Episode VIII secrets via Twitter. Turns out it was just an April Fools. Mark Hamill is bloody brilliant isn’t he?…
…Speaking of sharing, and Rian Johnson did post a behind the scenes image from Episode VIII featuring Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Katana which you can see here…
…Two bits of casting news on Star Wars: Episode VIII now, and a rumour has come out that Ade Edmondson (best known here in the UK for TV comedies The Young Ones and Bottom) has been cast in the movie. However, it should be noted that this rumour comes from UK tabloid The Sun, which is often known for making up stories with “sources” in order to sell papers. So, let’s take this with a pinch of salt for now…
…The other bit of casting news is more exciting and comes from a more credible source. The folks over at Making Star Wars have caught wind that Frank Oz is currently in London and has been seen at Pinewood Studios were Episode VIII is currently being shot. Not only that, but other sources are saying that the Pinewood recreation of the island seen at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been designed to allow for puppetry. If you put all of this together, it would seem that Oz will be reprising his role as Yoda once again – and he might even be doing it in puppet form. Of course, Oz could be there to simply provide voice work as he did for The Force Awakens, but he could also be there to supervise the motion capture work for the character should the CGI him in. Either way, we know that he’s there to work…
…Speaking of former Jedi Masters, and Ewan McGregor has AGAIN been talking about doing another movie as Obi-Wan Kenobi. “I’d very much like to do one too,” he said. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a—I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years. I’m not sure I’m at liberty to say, really [whether I’ve spoke to Kathleen Kennedy], but I’m very interested in doing that. That would be great. Maybe there’s even a trilogy!” That’s more than one occasion where some one has mentioned a trilogy of Obi-Wan movies…
…Moving on to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you can watch a side-by-side comparison video between the movie and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Upon its release The Force Awakens was criticised for being a remake of Lucas’ 1977 magnum opus, so why not see for yourself…
…In other Star Wars: The Force Awakens news, you can read our review of the Blu-Ray release here, and there is a casting featurette here as well as three more featurettes here. Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams has also been talking about the highly-anticipated table read special feature, by revealing what role Mark Hamill played in it considering he has no lines of dialogue…
…Oh, and you can watch the Honest Trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens here…
…Ever since the finale to Star Wars Rebels’ first season and the revelation that Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice from The Clone Wars series, is alive and well, fans have been speculating how exactly she dealt with Order 66’s aftermath and joined up with the growing Rebellion. Well, some of those questions will be answered this October in the upcoming YA novel Star Wars: Ahsoka. Read more about it here…
…Now that Star Wars Rebels is finished for another season, showrunner Dave Filoni has lent his support to a popular fan theory suggesting that The Clone Wars and Rebels‘ Captain Rex makes an appearance during the Battle of Endor in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. “I think the one thing I have really thought about is I really do think that Rex is that guy on Endor. I really do,” he said in a Q&A. “Why else is there a bearded old guy on Endor, Tano? Why? It makes no sense. If you don’t want that to happen, do you know what that means? I’m gonna make that happen. I’m getting like Palpatine, I’m getting power crazy…”
…If you’ve ever wanted to cuddle up to Wicket W. Warrick then you’re in luck, as Build-A-Bear Workshop are now offering the lovable little Ewok from Return of the Jedi…
