Emma Withington reviews The Fix #2…
From the creators of The Superior Foes of Spider-Man (Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber), comes a story of the crooked cops, scheming mobsters, and corrupt politicians that run things—and the sex toy that can bring them all down. Oh, and the hero is a drug-sniffing beagle named Pretzels. Bad people do bad things to each other in this frenetic, outrageous, sometimes off-putting new caper!
Mac is injured in the line of duty and Roy seeks the help of another detective with a tough case.
Roy and Mac are the definition of dirty cops, while taking this idea to the next level. In debt to their unhinged, psychotic, anti-vaccination activist boss Josh – Roy decides to take positive steps towards their ‘monetary obligations’, by shooting his partner Mac in the hand after a fun, ostensibly innocent day out in Hollywood. ‘You were worried about being able to jerk off with it, but now you got a nice hole to work with.’ – Roy
The Fix series is something quite special. I’m frequently digging around for fresh comics that catch my eye – or new/old comics – and once in a while I’ll find something that really stands out and becomes a prominent feature on my shelves. The Fix is already on my list to buy as a collection, once complete, and only two issues exist so far…but why? Well, for one, while it presents familiar concepts that you can jump straight into, its surreal off the wall nature renders it unique and keeps you guessing, every step of the way.
I was expecting The Fix #2 to, as in most comics, take a breather and possibly slow down in pace. It didn’t and that’s fantastic. The script by Nick Spencer remains as tight as a face full of botox and continues to be packed full of text, none of which feels unnecessary or skips a beat. It oozes personality with well fleshed out characters; Roy in particular is despicably likeable. As for the visuals, Steve Lieber’s art continues to be flawless in the flawed world of The Fix.
There is a huge quantity of passion thrust into this project and It really is a diamond – I am struggling to find fault with it as a whole. I have been reading and re reading The Fix #2 – it’s completely effortless – and nothing presents itself as a glaring negative because you’re enjoying it too much, except…we were promised a dog.
The Fix #2 feeds you so much and some; yet you’re still left wanting more. Haven’t already checked out the rather chunky The Fix #1? It’s not too late to get on board! If you like Deadpool – particularly the Daniel Way years- Grand Theft Auto, The Boys, or, if like me, you run on irreverent and crass humour as petrol…you’ll lap this up like Pretzels the dog.
