Universal Pictures are set to unveil a cinematic universe based on the novels of Robert Ludlum, and the first film will star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal will team up with Mythology Entertainment screenwriters James Vanderbilt, Brad Fischer and William Sherak, along with Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner of Captivate Entertainment, to create a series of movies based on Ludlum’s work. The author is best known for the books which the Bourne series is based on.
The first film will be an adaptation of The Janson Directive, which will star Johnson. Other rumoured titles include: The Parsifal Mosaic, The Sigma Protocol and Covert One.
The aim is to bring the films under one cinematic umbrella, with crossover appeal. With the success of Marvel, DC and the upcoming Universal monsters reboots, there is a huge market for shared universes at the moment.
The Janson Directive is the type of action-orientated star vehicle that’s tailor-made for Johnson, and the former wrestler is excited about the project.
“The character is complex, conflicted, bad ass and lethal — I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this and bring him to life. Between Jamie, Akiva, Captivate and Universal, it’s an exciting time to help produce and build out this awesome Ludlum universe.”
No details of a release date were made available, but Flickering Myth will keep you posted when more information is revealed.
