The Shallows surprises audiences and scares up a $16 million opening

June 27, 2016 by admin

Shark movie The Shallows opened domestically over the weekend [read our review here], and while it was never going to compete with giants like Finding Dory and Independence Day: Resurgence, it performed very well.

Opening on just under 3,000 screens, the Blake Lively-starring film brought home an estimated $16.7 million (an average of $5,500 per screening). With a rumoured budget of $17 million, The Shallows has almost already made back its money back and is well on its way to turning a solid profit. The film scored a B+ on CinemaScore and has come out pretty favourably with critics, so it should drop around 60-70% next weekend.

The Shallows has only opened in the US so far, and all other territories will open in the next few weeks and months.

A young woman who is dealing with the recent death of her mother is surfing on an isolated beach and gets stranded 20 yards off shore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark.

The Shallows is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop) and stars Blake Lively (Gossip Girl).
