Like many horror movies of the 1980s Sleepaway Camp has not escaped the possibility of a remake for today’s audiences. The movie has been in development and talked about for some time, but it looks like it may be on the backburner according to original director Robert Hiltzik.
During a Q&A session at a screening of the 1983 cult favourite slasher movie held by Fangoria and Scream Factory, when asked about the remake Hiltzik said, “There were several studios interested in remaking Sleepaway Camp. But they had their own vision for what that should be, and in the interest of protecting what worked about Sleepaway Camp, I decided to try to remake the film myself. But whether or not that will actually pan out is still in the air.”
But it looks like this isn’t the end for the adventures of Angela Baker. “I will say there is another story out there for Sleepaway Camp that follows Return to Sleepaway Camp. I ended that movie in a way that didn’t close up the series for a reason,” he added. “I actually may have some news on a third Sleepaway Camp film soon so keep an eye out for that.”
As you can tell by his use of “third movie”, it’s clear that Hiltzik doesn’t count the Michael Sampson directed “sequels” Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers and Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland or the fan-cut Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor. Robert Hiltzik directed a direct-to-DVD sequel in 2008 entitled Return to Sleepaway Camp which wasn’t met with much praise.
Sleepaway Camp is released on Blu-Ray on May 27th 2014.
