Word from Hollywood is that Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) won’t be getting his chiseled abs out again for Magic Mike XXL, if comments from comedian Gabriel Iglesias is anything to go by.
Iglesias of course played DJ Tobias in the original, and has has indicated that McConaughey may not reprise his role as Xquisite owner Dallas for the upcoming sequel after all, despite previous reports to the opposite. During an appearance on Dish Nation, Iglesias had said: “Word has it that Matt’s probably not gonna be involved, because he’s worth a lot of money now – that whole Oscar thing.”
Since his win for Dallas Buyers Club back in February, McConaughey has since added Best Dramatic Actor from the TV Critics Awards earlier this week for his work in the superb HBO crime mystery True Detective. And despite his popularity, writer and star of the sequel Channing Tatum had previously said he “…think[s] everyone’s gonna be back, [but] obviously no one’s deals are done.”
In any case, if McConaughey does indeed rip his shirt off for another go round, his appearance may be a mere cameo, with reports suggesting “his role will be drastically smaller than before.”
Should McConaughey return for Magic Mike XXL, or can the film survive his non-apperance? Is there anyone who could replace him?
Magic Mike XXL, directed by Gregory Jacobs (Criminal) and co-written by Tatum and original writer Reid Carolin, is due for release in July 2015.
