Michael Fassbender to play “Lucifer-like” figure in Terrence Malick’s Weightless; Iggy Pop and John Lydon to appear

December 30, 2016 by Justin Cook

Over the course of director Terrence Malick’s career, it’s become abundantly clear that he isn’t one for hastily working through any stage of production and delivering a quickly pieced together finished film. While you can choose pretty much any film of his for evidence of that point, why not look to the next one on his schedule, 2017’s Weightless.

Weightless began filming in 2012, and while it’s set for a March 17th release date, not so much as a trailer has hit the web yet. Information in general about the upcoming film is scarce, but a new report from The Times (via The Playlist) uncovers a few details about the movie.

The outlet claims that Michael Fassbender, who is set to star in the project, will play a “Lucifer-like” character and share the screen with Iggy Pop and John Lydon, the former lead vocalists for The Stooges and The Sex Pistols, respectively.

Pop and Lydon aren’t the only musicians set to appear in the film, as Malick has also recruited Arcade Fire, Alan Palomo, Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes and The Black Lips, who were all filmed at an Austin City Limits Music Festival from a number of years ago. The film is set against the Austin, Texas music scene and centers around two intersecting love triangles.

Malick has lined up an incredibly talented cast for the feature film that also includes Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Haley Bennett, Val Kilmer, Benicio del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Bérénice Marlohe and many more. Some actors are even unsure if they’ll be in the final cut of the film, seeing as how Malick has a knack for cutting down the size of actors’ roles or cutting them out entirely in post-production.
