J.J. Abrams producing RuPaul dramedy series

March 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions has teamed up with RuPaul to produce a half-hour dramedy series presenting a fictionalised version of the life of the drag queen and global LGBTQ icon.

The series will be penned by Gary Lennon (Power, Orange Is the New Black) and takes place in 1980s New York. It will follow RuPaul’s early days in NYC, where he became a popular fixture on the nightclub scene.

Bad Robot is developing the series alongside RuPaul’s World of Wonder, which produces the Emmy Award-winning RuPaul’s Drag Race. It is expected to be shopped to prospective outlets in the near future.
