Chris Pratt was surprised by the criticism for Passengers

April 21, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Star Chris Pratt was apparently caught by surprise upon hearing the criticism for his 2016 movie Passengers.

The sci-fi drama, starring himself and Jennifer Lawrence, had a lot of buzz behind it, but ultimately was scorned by critics and never really caught fire with fans.

Passengers was set aboard a massive space vessel where Pratt and Lawrence are woken up halfway through the long slumber necessary to make the journey to their new planetary home.

As mentioned, the film was not received well, many finding the nefarious nature of some of the movie’s plot points as enough reason to savage the film.

And it turns out that Pratt himself didn’t know quite what to make of the reception it received. When asked if it surprised him the actor said, “It did, it really did. I was really caught off guard by that. It was definitely a lesson.”

Pratt however is happy with the film, saying, “I personally think the movie is very good, I’m very proud of it,” he says. “I’ll be curious to see if it holds up — the criticism and the movie.”

He then added, “I’m proud of how the movie turned out and it did just fine to make money back for the studio.

“But the critical score was disproportionately negative compared to the Cinemascore. It got the same rating on Rotten Tomatoes as Paul Blart: Mall Cop, maybe worse.”

It’s obvious that Pratt really didn’t see this coming. Hopefully the actor doesn’t stop taking risks with more serious projects, balancing adult dramas such as Passengers with his blockbuster successes like Jurassic World.

You can next see Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 which will be released on April 28th in the UK and on May 5th in the States.
