James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was released overseas this past weekend [read our reviews here and here], and the film’s box office opening of $100 million has pushed the Marvel Cinematic Universe past a very big milestone. Starting with its launch in 2008 with Iron Man, the MCU has now earned $11 billion worldwide. It surpassed Harry Potter and Star Wars quite some time ago, and with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok later this year, it’s certainly going to extend its lead. Read more here.
Speaking of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Chris Pratt has been talking about the team’s role in Avengers: Infinity War, downplaying the impact they will have on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. “We definitely will have a strong presence, but we are playing supporting cast – you know what I mean?” Pratt said. “We’re there to help them tell an awesome Infinity War story. But Guardians is cosmic. It is its own special off-shoot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Read more here.
DARK TOWER
Do not adjust your monitor – the trailer for The Dark Tower is actually on its way. Despite the film seeing its release on August 4th THIS YEAR, Sony announced our first look will arrive today via some motion posters and character posters featuring Idris Elba’s Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black. The long-gestating reboot of The Crow is – apperantly – still in active development. The film has gone through many iterations and even more directors, and now The Crow‘s executive producer F. Javier Gutierrez – who was once in the director’s chair – has confirmed that the adaptation will be R-rated. “With The Crow, I haven’t talked to them in a while so I don’t know what is going on with that, but we are going to do an R-rated movie,” he says. “I come from Europe, I’m very dark so I’m going to go for it. If any movie has to be R-rated then it’s The Crow.” Read more of that interview here.
INHUMANS POSTER
Speaking of projects that were long-gestating, the official Twitter account for Marvel’s Inhumans unveiled the first teaser poster for ABC and IMAX’s upcoming series. Check it out here.
A new rumour for Star Wars: The Last Jedi landed online yesterday, which suggested that Leia will face off against Supreme Leader Snoke at some point in the movie. Now bear in mind, this does come from a Reddit user with “insider knowledge”, so it could be all fabricated nonsense. But if you want to read more about it, you can do so here.
It was announced that Spider-Man: Homecoming was heading back for reshoots last March, and a new report from the weekend has revealed Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan) reunited for a “secret shoot”. No word yet on what it could be, but it’s likely for some sort of post-credits sequence. Read more here.
LOGAN: NOIR
20th Century Fox has officially announced the upcoming home-entertainment release of Hugh Jackman’s final X-Men outing Logan, which is set to hit 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on May 23rd in North America and July 10th in the UK and includes the Logan Noir black-and-white edition as part of the bonus features.
