Sony’s Spider-Man spin-offs to exist in the same universe as Spider-Man: Homecoming, Amy Pascal seemingly confirms

June 18, 2017 by Justin Cook

Just a few days after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige seemingly confirmed that there were no plans to bring characters (specifically Venom) from Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spin-off films (Venom and Silver & Black) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, former Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman and Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal has offered up a slightly contradictory statement.

Feige and Pascal were sitting down with German movie news outlet Filmstarts to promote the early July release of Spider-Man: Homecoming when the interviewer inquired about the relationship between the Sony spin-off films and the MCU. While the expected answer, based on previous statements, was that the two would exist separately from one another, Pascal replied, “[Venom and Silver & Black] will all take place in the world that we are now creating for Peter Parker. I mean, they’ll be adjuncts to it, they may be different locations, but it will all still be in the same world and they will be connected to each other as well.”

The interviewer pressed further about whether or not that meant Homecoming star Tom Holland could make an appearance in Sony’s films, to which Pascal simply said, “There’s a chance… there’s always a chance.”

Ever since the announcement of Sony’s Marvel Universe, fans have wondered how the studio would go about telling stories surrounding key Spider-Man characters without Spider-Man himself, so Pascal’s comments, sort of, clarify that aspect of the forthcoming movie universe. It sounds like, perhaps to a less severe degree, the Sony spin-off films could exist to Spider-Man: Homecoming and the larger MCU similar to how the Marvel Netflix shows exist to the MCU, where it’s implied that they take place in the same universe but crossovers are rare.

If that’s true, the relationship between Marvel Studios and Sony could be an interesting one. Marvel may be mostly (but not entirely) opposed to making R-rated superhero movies, but reports suggest that Sony isn’t; as confusing as it may sound, this agreement could bring R-rated movies into the MCU without actually bringing R-rated movies into the MCU.

Sony may be looking to surprise audiences with some sort of bridge between the MCU and SMU revealed during 2018’s Venom (perhaps a Tom Holland cameo), so folks from the studio could purposely be trying to provide only shreds of clarity when fielding questions regarding the movie universes.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton (Birdman), Jacob Batalon (North Woods), Michael Barbieri (Little Men), Zendaya (K.C. Undercover), Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), Martin Starr (Silicon Valley), Donald Glover (Community), Laura Harrier (One Life to Live), Kenneth Choi (Captain America: The First Avenger), Hannibal Buress (Broad City), Isabella Amara (The Boss), Jorge Lendeborg, Jr. (Graceland), JJ Totah (Glee), Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black), Bokeem Woodbine (Riddick), Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey), Garcelle Beauvais (Hollywood Today Live), Tiffany Espensen (Kirby Buckets), Michael Chernus  (Orange is the New Black), Jona Xiao (Halt and Catch Fire) and Martha Kelly (Baskets). The film is set for release on July 5th in the UK and July 7th in the States.
