The Thick of It and Veep creator Armando Iannucci has a new project in development at HBO, with the cable network placing a pilot order for a new space-set comedy series under the working title of Avenue 5.
Deadline reports that the project is set in the future, mostly in space, and reportedly takes place on a spaceship – presumably the titular Avenue 5. HBO has given the greenlight to a pilot, which is expected to shoot in London in 2018, and has also picked up backup scripts in preparation for a series order.
Iannucci has won two Emmy Awards for the political satire Veep, as well as being nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Thick of It’s 2009 big screen spinoff In the Loop. His latest film The Death of Stalin is set for release in October after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, and according to our reviewer Thomas Harris, is “a work of absolute genius”.
