The boardgame Settlers of Catan is about to make it to the big screen. According to Variety, Sony will develop the game into a feature film with the hope of potentially starting a franchise. Gail Katz (Air Force One), who gained the film rights to Settlers of Catan in 2015, will produce the movie with Dan Lin (It) and Jonathan Eirich (Death Note) while Blaise Hemingway (Ugly Dolls) will pen the script.
“We’re excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life,” Katz said. “As huge fans of the game, we’re struck by the endless possibilities of stories that it could inspire. It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to work in a world beloved by millions of people, and expand its story for the screen.”
The game was created by Klaus Teuber and has gone on to sell over 25 million copies worldwide, launching several expansion packs. Settlers of Catan players attempt to create a dominant community on the ever-changing fictional island of Catan amid scarce resources.
