Ever since Stranger Things Season 2 released last month, the internet has been busy “shipping” series mainstays Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbour), and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder). The potential for a relationship has been present since season 1, but the introduction of alpha-male Bob Newby as Joyce’s love interest put that romance to rest. For now. What does actor David Harbour think about Hopper, and Joyce getting together in future seasons? Chatting with Variety, the actor shared his thoughts:
“These are two lost, broken people who need each other but are so prideful and messed up that they’ll never admit it. It’s great to allow that to play out over several seasons…I don’t know that ultimately they’re quite right for each other. Talk about problems! If Eleven is difficult, imagine him and Joyce. There would be nightmare fights! Him being prideful and emotionally shut down and unavailable. But I do think he feels something for her … It’s a special connection. I think that’s something that’s very deep between them. We’ll have to see where that goes in future seasons. But I root for some happiness for Joyce and Hopper. If they can find that together, that would be great. But we’ll see.”

The Duffer Brothers are playing the long-game with Stranger Things, piecing together the lore of the upside-down slowly over 4 (or 5?) seasons. It looks like that mentality is definitely carrying over to the characters as well. We may see Hopper, and Joyce together yet, but it may not be for a while.
It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.
The second season of Stranger Things sees the return of cast members Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer and Joe Keery, along with new additions Sean Astin (The Goonies), Paul Reiser (Aliens), Linnea Berthelsen (The Desert), Sadie Sink (Odyssey), Dacre Montgomery (Power Rangers) and Brett Gelman (Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America).
