Action Comics #1 sells for a record-breaking $3.2 million

August 25, 2014 by Gary Collinson

An near-mint copy of 1938’s Action Comics #1 – the first appearance of Superman – has sold for a record $3,207,852 at auction on eBay, shattering the previous record of $2.16 million for the same issue back in 2011.

The latest auction was for the highest-graded copy of Action Comics #1 ever evaluated by the Comics Guaranty Corporation – a CGC graded 9.0 with white pages. The previous record-holder, which was owned by Nicolas Cage, was also a CGC 9.0, albeit with cream to off-white pages.

The first comic book to sell for over $3 million, this copy of Action Comics is one of four to sell for over $1 million, while the only other books to reach that milestone are Amazing Fantasy #15, featuring the debut of Spider-Man, and Detective Comics #27, which introduced the character of Batman.
