Martin Scorsese and Dennis Lehane to develop a Shutter Island TV series for HBO

August 26, 2014 by James Garcia

Dennis Lehane’s bestselling thriller novel Shutter Island has already been given the big screen treatment, courtesy of Martin Scorsese. Now, according to Deadline, Scorsese, HBO, and Paramount have teamed up to adapt and expand upon the book for television.

The series is tentatively titled Ashecliffe, after the isolated mental hospital where Shutter Island took place. The series will focus on the hospital’s past, “and the secrets and misdeeds perpetrated by its founders who erected the hospital in the early 20th Century and developed the methods of treatment used for the mentally ill.”

Lehane himself will serve as screenwriter along with Tom Bernardo , with Scorsese in the director’s chair for the pilot. Lehane and Scorsese will produce, along with Paramount TV head Amy Powell, Shutter Island producer Brad Fisher, and Leonardo DiCaprio under his production banner, Appian Way.

We’ll have more news about Ashecliffe as it becomes available.
