Andy Naylor reviews The Colonized #3…
“The zombie horde is growing, the aliens and humans are outmanned (and out-alienned), and the citizens of Carbon Falls are beset from all sides. Which all pale before the looming explosive threat brought on from one of their own!“
The Colonzied follows the self-governed town of Carbon Falls and Huxley ‘Hux’ Robertson as they attempt to become a self-sufficient green town. There’s just a problem or two, a crashed alien spaceship and a horde of zombies. Zombies and Aliens in the same place. Cool.
Issue 3 begins with Hux suited and booted in Alien spacesuits and ATF Agent Lew Dawson hiding under a barn staring at Hux’s dead Father – who’s dead, not Zombie dead. The Colonzied is an enjoyable read and the plot contains a good amount of dark comedy. I would compare it somewhat to The Walking Dead but not quite as bleak and with good humour that stays away from over the top of slapstick. It continues at an enjoyable pace and ends with a lovely little cliff hanger.
The drawing is detailed and very gruesome in places, and the facial expressions are superb. The colouring is cleverly quite neutral, full of greens, greys and browns, so whenever bright red blood appears it stands out and, as a reader, you really take note.
I do think The Colonzied is a bit short and if I were comparing it to a TV show, it would feel like a mini-webisode. Just as you’re getting into it it’s over. With something so swift I was left feeling unsatisfied and wanted a little more of my time filled.
