Having taken nearly $600 million worldwide when it was released in 2007, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. have been trying to get a sequel to I Am Legend off the ground. However, given the… hmmm… nature of the ending, it was always a question of “how?”. A prequel had been discussed but all plans put in motion fell apart. So what do you do when you have no other avenues to look at? Reboot.
Deadline are reporting that Warner Bros. will be retooling a spec script they purchased called A Garden at the End of the World from writer Gary Graham into a reboot of I Am Legend. Graham was a former Apple store employee who posted the script, described as a “sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers“, on the Black List. Warner Bros. purchased the script and are now working with Graham to retool it to fir their franchise.
This will be the fourth big screen adaptation of Richard Matheson’s book, following I Am Legend, The Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth.
Deadline are also hinting that this venture could lead to the possibility of an I Am Legend franchise, with spin-offs and sequels to create an “expanded universe” much like the Marvel movies.
