Wonder Woman was the most profitable superhero movie of 2017, and most profitable DCEU film to date

March 23, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Warner Bros. scored a rare win for the DC Extended Universe last year with Wonder Woman. Not only did it win over fans and critics alike, but it also went on to gross $822 million around the globe.

While this was less than Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming ($880.2 million) and second to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($872.7 million) in terms of the DCEU, Deadline is reporting that Wonder Woman was the most profitable superhero movie of 2017, and the most profitable instalment of the DCEU to date.

As reported by the trade, Warner Bros. pocketed $372.9 million on Wonder Woman’s theatrical receipts, with a further $282.2 million in home entertainment sales and TV deals, giving the studio a total income of $659.10 million.

Deduct from that a production budget of $149 million, marketing costs of $158 million, $59.7 million in fees to the producers and actors, and $39.5 million for the home entertainment release, the total cost for Wonder Woman was $406.2 million, leaving a profit of $252.9 million.

In comparison, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cost Warner Bros. $575 million with $105.7 million profit in total, while Suicide Squad cost $459.9 million, and earned $158.9 million profit.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman sees Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) and Ann Wolf.
