It’s long been speculated that Marvel Studios will follow in the footsteps of its comic book source material by killing off Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and actor Chris Evans stoked those fires last week when he was quoting as revealing he has no plans to return as Captain America after the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4.
Speaking to Evans ahead of the release of next month’s Avengers: Infinity War, Entertainment Tonight asked the actor what he’ll miss most about his role after he’s hung up the shield.
“Well, you know, my contract is over, so that’s as far as I know,” said Evans. “[I’ll miss] everything. I mean, it’s not just the character, it’s the people – the experience, such good movies, such wonderful memories. I’ll miss a lot.”
As we saw in the latest trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, Cap will be going one-on-one against Josh Brolin’s villain Thanos, so it’s very possible that we could see the death of Captain America – particularly as there’s been strong hints from Marvel that we’ll be saying goodbye to some of our heroes in Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel.
Then again, it’s also highly unlikely that Marvel is going to announce any contract extensions or renewals so close to Infinity War for fear of spoiling the movie, so it seems we may just have to wait until the credits role on Avengers 4 in 2019 to find out exactly what the MCU landscape looks like going in to Phase Four.
