Phil Lord and Chris Miller to write The LEGO Movie sequel

When The LEGO Movie sequel was quickly announced earlier this year, it appeared that the first film’s directors, fan-favorites Phil Lord and Chris Miller, would be returning only in a producing capacity. Well, fret not LEGO fans, because according to Deadline, Lord and Miller have signed on to write the script for The LEGO Movie 2.

There’s unfortunately no word on whether or not Lord and Miller will direct as well, but after the first movie grossed $468 million at the box office (currently standing as the third highest-grossing film of the year in the US), there’s no doubt that the executives over at Warner Bros. want them to. The LEGO Movie animation director Chris McKay was originally on board to helm the follow-up, but has since switched gears and will direct the 2017 LEGO Batman spin-off instead. That leaves the door wide open for Lord and Miller’s return.

The downside of being uber successful up-and-coming directors, however, is that your upcoming slate becomes incredibly full, and Lord and Miller certainly have a lot of work ahead of them. They don’t have another film gig lined up at this time, but will be diving deeper into the TV realm. They directed the pilot for the successful Fox series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and have three new shows lined up: the Will Forte comedy series Last Man on Earth at Fox, an untitled comedy from The Interview screenwriter Dan Sterling for CBS, and remake of the 1981 sci-fi comedy Greatest American Hero.
