Marvel’s Howard the Duck all but disappeared after his eponymous 1986 film failed miserably and entered the pantheon of terrible comic book movies, but the character is primed to make a triumphant return, thanks in no small part to a funny post-credits scene in this year’s runaway hit, Guardians of the Galaxy.
While he may not be coming back to the big screen anytime soon, the anthropomorphic mallard is getting his new ongoing comic series, from Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals) and artist Joe Quinones (Batman ’66).
The comic hits store shelves on March 4th, 2015, and will be lighter and more humorous than classic Howard tales. In an interview with EW, Zdarsky commented on what to expect from the new series, saying:
“[My] ultimate goal is to make it funny. Marvel has taken chances on funny books and injecting humor into superhero titles, so I want to make sure this is worth some chuckles here and there… There’s some fun sci-fi stuff coming up (Howard is an alien after all). I’ve always been drawn (fowl joke – as in bad) to that, and have always enjoyed how Marvel handles all things cosmic… I think it’s going to be fun! We’ll get to explore the Marvel Universe with a very short tour guide and a very good artist and me, a man who dresses as Garfield on the weekends.”
The series will focus on mysterious capers throughout the Marvel Universe, beginning with a case pairing Howard up with femme fatale Black Cat.
