It’s almost the end for one of TV’s most treasured characters. Ricky Gervais’ Derek makes its final hurrah next Monday with a special episode, bringing the series to a close in classic Gervais fashion, after just two seasons.
The episode, entitled “The Special,” promises to bring fans lots of laughs (and likely a few tears) as the gang celebrates the marriage of Hannah and Tom. The final episode promises updates on Derek’s relationship with his new girlfriend Tracey, of whom he speaks fondly in the trailer. “She’s nice inside and out, like a Cadbury’s Creme Egg.” We’re also teased with a hospital visit involving Kev, who can be heard making a lovely best man speech at the Broad Hill-based wedding. “Has there ever been a worse wedding than this,” he says. The big question still remains… will Dougie get the “kiss of life” and make one last triumphant return to Broad Hill? We can only hope!
Gervais commented on Derek in an interview on his website, saying his sweater-wearing, animal-loving, autograph-obsessed character is by far the most challenging role he’s ever played. “Writing it, acting it, doing everything for it. From the beginning to end, it had been stormy and challenging and exciting.” Gervais said of his character.
Derek, starring Ricky Gervais, Kerry Godliman and David Earl, is set to air its final episode “The Special” on Monday 22nd December at 10 p.m. Channel 4.
