Universal options children’s superhero fantasy book The Princess in Black

February 21, 2015 by Gary Collinson

With superheroes pretty much absent from Universal’s catalogue, the studio has moved to option the movie rights to Shannon Hale and Dean Hale’s bestselling children’s book The Princess in Black, a superhero fantasy revolving around a fairy tale princess who moonlights as a masked vigilante.

According to Deadline, the story centres on “Princess Magnolia, who by day wears the obligatory flouncy dresses, but by night becomes the Princess in Black. The book marries the princess tradition with the superhero genre, a wish-fulfillment tale for contemporary young girls who like their pink dresses and tea parties with a side of combat boots and riding into battle on horseback.”
