Andrew Newton reviews The X-Files: Season 10 #21…
“Elders,” part 1 of 5: For as long as humanity has known of the alien plot to re-colonize the Earth, there have been men who would conspire to consolidate that knowledge, and the power that came with it, for themselves. But the “Syndicate” that long bedeviled Agents Mulder and Scully are no more, consumed and destroyed by those very secrets they kept… or are they? What new secrets will they fight and kill for? And what will become of the X-Files once those secrets are laid bare? The end begins here!
For a franchise that seemed to lose all favour with the critics back in 2002 when the original TV series ended, The X-Files is still very popular with many to this day. Issue 21 sees the start of a new 5 part storyline titled Elders which finds our favourite FBI investigators, Agents Mulder and Scully thrown into the middle of another mystery that maybe or maybe not involves the ‘Syndicate’.
I was quite impressed with the quality of the story, it reminded me of the same high standards of some episodes of the TV series. Joe Harris has really captured the dark and mysterious atmosphere that The X-Files is renowned for. The artwork by Matthew Dow Smith adds to the dark storyline, the use of shadows in the scenes with those who I think are the Elders is very clever.
This was my first time reading The X-Files comic and I did quite enjoy it. This is the first part of a new story so it will get more interesting as it develops but at the moment it certainly seems very close in mood and mystery to what made the TV series great.
