Despite the cancellation of Roseanne last week in the wake of Roseanne Barr’s racist social media remarks, it seems the Conner family could be set for a return to the small screen – albeit without their matriarch.
Deadline is reporting that the show’s executive producers Tom Werner and Bruce Helford and Darlene actress Sara Gilbert (who was the main driving force behind the recent revival) are pushing for a spinoff and the producers will be pitching the idea to ABC executives this week.
According to the site, the potential new series could see a greater emphasis on the character of Darlene, although it is expected to include the rest of the Roseanne cast, except Barr. However, one hurdle to overcome is the fact that Barr is a co-creator and executive producer on Roseanne, and therefore has a backend deal.
It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if ABC does move ahead with a spinoff, as the revival has been an enormous success for the network, being the most watched scripted series of the past season with over 22 million viewers per episode.
