For those awaiting Star Wars: The Last Jedi, many are anticipating the potential reunion between exiled Jedi Luke Skywalker and his former protege Kylo Ren, played by Mark Hamill and Adam Driver respectively. Star Wars: The Force Awakens revealed that, much like his grandfather before him, Kylo Ren turned to the dark side and destroyed Luke’s new generation of Jedi. If they come face-to-face in The Last Jedi, the reunion would be awkward to say the least.
In Vanity Fair‘s piece on The Last Jedi, Hamill and Driver reveal they rarely spoke or saw each other outside of the set because Driver was committed to playing the part of an angry, bitter student. He’s known for his method acting in films and took the role seriously.
“There’s big personal things that I find about every character, not just in Star Wars, that you have to make as personal as possible,” Driver said. “It’s the big joke about being an actor, that you make everything you’re doing seem like it’s life or death. The things about that character that I find painful, that I really relate to, I kind of prefer to keep to myself.”
Hamill even said that he had invited Driver to lunch so the two could get to know each other better and prepare for the next Star Wars films, but Driver turned him down: “I remember saying to Adam, ‘I don’t know how you work, or your technique. But, at some point, you were my nephew. I probably bounced you on my knee. I probably babysat for you. There’s that side, and now we’re both estranged from the Skywalker family. All I’m suggesting is, if you’d like, maybe we could go to lunch, we could get together and hang out.’” When Driver said no, Hamill took it in good stride, saying “And more power to him.”
Vanity Fair added, though that John Boyega, who plays First Order defector Finn, loved to mess with Driver and attempting to crack through his serious exterior.“I give Adam hugs randomly, just for no reason… he just stands there. He just waits for me to be done.”
