The upcoming Crazy Rich Asians TV series has begun the development process with Adele Lim leading the charge.
Lim will be the Max television series’s executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the script for the Crazy Rich Asians film with Peter Chiarelli.
Original director Jon M. Chu (Wicked) will executive produce via his Electric Somewhere banner. Author Kevin Kwan will also serve as an EP on the series. Max confirmed that the drama series will incorporate elements from Kwan’s novels, including China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems and Lies and Weddings.
Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy about Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), an Asian-American professor, who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), for a wedding. She soon discovers that Nick is incredibly wealthy and comes from one of the richest families in Asia. The film explores themes of class, family expectations, and identity, with Rachel navigating the lavish world of the ultra-rich while facing challenges from Nick’s disapproving mother and the opulent lifestyle that comes with it.
Wu and Goldding starred as part of the ensemble cast alongside Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Nico Santos, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Jeong, Awkwafina, and Lisa Lu. The film was notable for being the first Hollywood film in 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast.
