The last we heard of Bill & Ted 3, Keanu Reeves had claimed that the movie would cost $400 million dollars to make and that the script “needed to be adapted”. Whether it has or not is unclear, but the plans for a third movie featuring Bill S. Preston Esq and Ted “Theodore” Logan is making progress, with Bill himself Alex Winter telling Yahoo! News that we can expect “many versions” of the characters in the movie.
“[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It’s really sweet and really f*cking funny. But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot.”
In the past both Winters and Reeves have said that the plot would revolve around Bill and Ted struggling to find out why their music hasn’t created world peace like Rufus had told them in the previous movies.
“The concept is really funny: what if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?” Winters continues. “There’s many versions of ourselves in this movie.[It’s] answering the question: ‘What happened to these guys?’ They’re supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren’t the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later? To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility.”
Bill & Ted first came to popularity in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and the pair returned to the silver screen for the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey in 1991. They also had an animated series which ran from 1990 – 1991 named Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures with Winters and Reeves (along with George Carlin) reprising their roles.
