Are the 90s back? Before you say “As If,” we have news of an iconic 1995 film getting a new sequel series. Yes, Clueless is back with the fashion, with the original Cher Horowitz, Alicia Silverstone, set to return.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are attached to write, along with Jordan Weiss. The trio will also executive produce. CBS Studios will produce in association with Universal Television. Schwartz and Savage are known for co-creating the iconic teen-focused project, the hit series Gossip Girl, as well as its recent reboot on Max.
The original film’s writer and director, Amy Heckerling, and Robert Lawrence, who produced the film, also serve as executive producers.
Clueless was released in 1995 and instantly became a cult favorite with fans quoting the film and gushing over its chic fashion for decades. It was often credited as loosely based on the Jane Austen novel, Emma. Alongside Silverstone, the cast starred Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya.
Suppose you are confused about another Clueless project that fizzled out due to creative differences with Peacock? That series, from a different creative team, was described as a mystery series in which Cher disappeared, focusing instead on her best friend, Dionne. There was also a forgotten sequel series that aired on ABC and then on UPN from 1996 to 1999, spanning three seasons.
Plot details are still under wraps, but stay tuned to Flickering Myth for more news.
