Deadline is reporting that Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother) and Megan Hilty (Smash) have signed on for the leads in The First Wives Club, a small screen reboot of the 1996 feature film, which is being produced by Paramount Television for TV Land.
Written by Rebecca Addelman (New Girl) and executive produced by Jenny Bicks and Karen Rosenfelt (Sex and the City), the pilot is set in present-day San Francisco and “revolves around three women – friends and classmates in the ’90s – who reconnect after their close friend from college dies in a freak accident. When they discover that they are all at a romantic crossroads, they band together to tackle divorce, relationships and life’s other annoying challenges.”
Hannigan will play Maggie, “an English professor at a university in San Francisco. Once an aspiring poet, she is a bright but frustrated woman who is struggling to put excitement back into her flagging marriage. When her old college friend dies, she is galvanized to finally make changes, starting with leaving her husband and tackling life with a renewed sense of adventure.”
Hilty is to portray Kim, “once a very successful actress who has “aged out” of Hollywood. Needy and vulnerable, she works hard at staying fit and gorgeous, still hoping for that breakout role, while doing cheesy commercials. Divorced, with an 8-year-old son, Kim is happy to reconnect with old friends.”
The First Wives Club was based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Olivia Goldsmith, and starred Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler. It was very successful, grossing over $180 million worldwide.
