Amazon Studios and Dark Horse Entertainment are developing an animated feature adaptation of the pop culture character Emily the Strange.
Created by Rob Reger in the 1990s as an advertising mascot for skateboards, the punky goth girl has since spawned a multi-million dollar merchandising brand spanning fashion, comics and books, toys and various other accessories. Dark Horse has been publishing comic books based upon the character since 2005.
THR reports that Reger will serve as a producer alongside Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg, and the search is now underway for a writer to pen the adaptation.
Universal Pictures had previously held the rights to the character, tapping Melissa Wallack (Dallas Buyers Club) to pen a live-action movie, which at one point had Chloe Grace Moretz attached to star.
