Amazon’s God of War adaptation has found a new lead to send it into battle as Ronald D. Moore has come on board as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the series from Sony TV and Amazon MGM Studios’ Prime Video.
It will be based on PlayStation’s hugely popular ancient mythology-themed video game. The franchise centers on Kratos, a former Greek god, who embarks on quests driven by revenge and redemption. The 2005 original follows Kratos as he seeks revenge against Ares, the god of war, who manipulated him into killing his family. In 2018, the franchise saw a reboot that transitioned to Norse mythology, exploring Kratos’s relationship with his son, Atreus.
The God of War game series has sold over 66 million across all entries and is hailed as PlayStation’s most profitable first-party brand.
Moore’s involvement comes after the original God of War creative team, showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins and exec producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, exited after two years working on the project. Deadline notes this marks the first major new project for Moore since he returned to Sony TV after he developed/co-created Outlander for Starz and For All Mankind for Apple TV+.
