Deadline is reporting that Amazon Studios is in development on a biographical TV series based upon the American rock band The Grateful Dead, tapping Oscar-nominated Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Jonathan Herman to pen the script.
Herman will use Grateful Dead roadie Steve Parish’s memoir Home Before Daylight: My Life on the Road with The Grateful Dead as the inspiration for the series, which aims to “capture the long-running phenomenon that is The Grateful Dead, a band of musical misfits who came of age during the apex of the 1960s San Francisco counter-culture movement.” Parish will serve as an executive producer on the series along with Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir, who will also oversee the music.
In addition to the series, Amazon also has the four-hour Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip set for release next month, having acquired the film at Sundance earlier this year.
